Foods that reduce the look of cellulite

It’s time to fight back against the dreaded cellulite dimples

A family photograph taken on the beach in the height of summer - it was my worst nightmare. I had braved a bikini (but only because it was covered by a sarong) and as my husband leant for the camera I felt the fear creep over me. "Make sure you only get my face in" I shouted, hastily covering up the dreaded orange peel skin that seems to have taken up residence upon my thighs.

Kim Kardashian bum cellulite

Don’t get me wrong, I know I am not the only one to battle with cellulite, in fact Kim Kardashian herself was snapped by a pap parading her dimples for all to see. I also know that around 90% of women suffer from cellulite, so why does it bother us so much and what can we do about it?

Although linked to body fat, cellulite does not necessarily occur when you are overweight. These fatty lumps are caused by many factors including genetics, hormones, elasticity of skin and the build up of toxins within our bodies. But must we just learn to live with it or is there something else we can do?

We all know that by making small changes to our lifestyle and diet can have a dramatic effect on the way in which our bodies look. By cutting back on processed fatty foods and sugar and introducing good fats into our diets can reduce the appearance of cottage cheese like skin and even help to smooth it out.

Take a look at my top foods for fighting those dreaded dimples, plus try out some cellulite busting recipes for added inspiration:

Already making up 60% of our bodily fluids, surely drinking more of the stuff won’t make that much of a difference? Wrong! Drinking more water may be one of the cheapest cellulite treatments available. It aids your body’s natural detox process and flushes out unwanted toxins, leaving your skin feeling supple, smooth and hydrated. Simply add a slice of lemon to some hot water in the mornings in place of a coffee and remember to carry around a bottle during the day – your dimply thighs will soon thank you for it.

herbal teas can help reduce cellulite

Herbal Teas

Dandelion, ginger and green tea are great for helping beat the dreaded orange peel. They all contain an active ingredient which stimulates and speeds up metabolism and helps with the release of stored fats in the body.

Whole Grains

We all know that brown pasta, brown rice and other whole grain cereals can aid weight loss as they release energy slowly making us feel fuller for longer. But did you also know that they are high in antioxidants which are great for battling against cellulite-causing toxins? Make the simple switch from white to brown and it won’t take long to see and feel the effects.

Dark Berries

Berries such as raspberries, blueberries and blackberries not only taste sweet and delicious but contain antioxidants which can help to break down fat deposits within your body. Add a handful of berries to your cereal or porridge in the morning or blend them up into a smoothie – it is a tasty solution for reducing that lumpy appearance.

It’s no surprise to see the humble banana on this list. Rich in potassium, they are a great source of energy, can reduce water retention and eliminate toxins. It’s little wonder that athletes go bananas over bananas in order to remain in top physical condition.

Eating papayas can help with smoother skin

Often found in lotions and potions, Papaya is high in vitamin c and beta-carotene which can prevent and reduce tissue damage, making your skin look smoother. It is also a great fat-busting fruit as it cleanses the colon and diminishes the look of cellulite. So pick up a papaya for breakfast and start adding this nutritional fruit to your diet.

Oily Fish

Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna contain essential fats called omega 3. These good fats have a structural effect and ensure stability of all cell membranes in the body helping to smooth out the appearance of cellulite.

This bright yellow spice is mainly used in Indian cuisine and is not only great for spicing things up but is good for combatting cellulite too. There are many benefits to cooking with turmeric as it can stimulate your circulation, reduce swelling and battle against toxins with antioxidants.

Chilli and Cayenne Pepper for cellulite reduction

Chilli and Cayenne Pepper

It’s time to heat things up a bit as these hot sauces provide the ultimate weapon in fighting against cellulite. By raising the temperature of your body, both spices can boost your metabolism for hours after eating them increasing your blood flow and circulation and providing you with more energy to burn off those calories.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Great for adding to salads and juices, apple cider vinegar (in its raw form), is packed with potassium, magnesium and calcium which can cleanse the body and relieve water retention. This ultimately means a reduction in both bloating and bumpy skin.

Dark Chocolate

For the chocoholics amongst you, you’ll be pleased to hear that you don’t have to forgo a treat to achieve supple and dimple-free skin. The natural cocoa found in dark chocolate is full of antioxidants, which assist in breaking down fat in cellulite. On top of that, the caffeine helps to dehydrate the fat cells under skin, evening out the surface.
