What is Garcinia Cambogia and what are its Ingredients?

Garcinia Cambogia is a fruit that looks like a small, green pumpkin indigenous to India and Southeast Asia. While the fruit has been prepared and eaten for many years, its weight loss properties have only been recently uncovered.

Still, due to anecdotal evidence and traditional teachings, modern scientists sought to examine the fruit to see if there was any truth to what the native peoples had been saying all along. What the scientists found was that the fruit of Garcinia Cambogia produced no compounds which could aid in weight loss.

However, the rind of the Garcinia Cambogia fruit contained hydroxycitric acid, or HCA.

HCA did indeed have properties which could either be clinically observed to provide moderate benefits when losing weight or followed trails of logic which suggested it would. Oddly, the rind is not a part of the fruit the native peoples commonly ate.

hydroxycitric acid (HCA)

Regardless, after some experiments, scientists learned that HCA can help block the formation of fat cells. Moreover, HCA can also help you reduce certain types of “bad” cholesterol. Still, some claims about HCA are unverified - though there is reason behind them.

HCA as produced by the body can increase the production of serotonin, a neurochemical which produces a pleasurable feeling. Serotonin can also act as an appetite suppressant.

As such, some sellers of Garcinia Cambogia extract will advertise it as either a mood enhancer, an appetite suppressant, or both. However, none of the effects regarding HCA extracted from Garcinia Cambogia and serotonin have been verified.

What are the side effects of Garcinia Cambogia?

Overdose: The studies around Garcinia Cambogia are fairly specific. First, they only provide doses of 1000 mg 3 times per day. Second, the studies only extend for 12 weeks. The reason for both of these limitations is that Garcinia Cambogia can generate liver toxicity if taken in larger amounts or for longer periods of time.

While this is not a given result, it is common enough that it should be carefully considered before beginning any weight loss herbal supplement regimen that includes Garcinia Cambogia. Moreover, if you already have a condition which affects your liver's ability to process toxins, this should weight even more heavily.

Patients with cirrhosis of the liver or incurable forms of hepatitis should be especially careful and should likely avoid Garcinia Cambogia altogether. Moreover, if you have ever had liver cancer or an autoimmune disease that affects the liver, you are also at an elevated risk to suffer liver toxicity as a result of taking Garcinia Cambogia.

General: The most common side effects of Garcinia Cambogia are digestive. These can include nausea, indigestion, and diarrhea. However, garcinia cambogia has been shown to affect one’s mental state as well. Specifically, Garcinia Cambogia has been linked with headaches, mental fog, and an increase in acetylcholine - which can have extremely negative effects in patients with dementia.

Immune System: Moreover, Garcinia Cambogia has also shown to cause issues with the immune system. This applies in more way than one, as the extract can suppress an immune system or irritate an already compromised immune system. This applies doubly for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding as your child’s immune system may become depressed or compromised as a result of you taking Garcinia Cambogia as well.

Allergic Reaction: Finally, like most substances we consume, some people will display an allergic reaction to Garcinia Cambogia. This can present with swelling, hives, itching, and difficulty breathing. If you show any of the symptoms after taking Garcinia Cambogia, stop immediately and consult with your doctor before continuing the regimen. If left unchecked, this could potentially cause anaphylaxis which can lead to death.

Is it safe for diabetics to take Garcinia cambogia?

Because the active ingredient in Garcinia Cambogia extract, HCA, directly works to prevent the formations of fat cells and absorption of glucose in the intestines, this can put diabetics in a precarious situation. Keep in mind, this does not necessarily mean that diabetics cannot safely consume Garcinia Cambogia. Simply, they must be more careful and observant when they do so.

Specifically, because of the effects regarding fat and glucose absorption that HCA has, it can be a beneficial herbal supplement for diabetics who are looking to get their blood sugar levels under control. However, this process can lead to too much of a good thing.

Could prevent glucose from being absorbed: In fact, if a diabetic already has their blood sugars under control with the aid of prescription medications, the HCA in Garcinia Cambogia can actually have adverse effects on the person. Essentially, the Garcinia Cambogia extract will prevent even the necessary amount of glucose from being absorbed and cause a sugar crash. As any diabetics patient knows, too severe a sugar level crash can be incredibly harmful, potentially causing shock or death.

Unfortunately, studies which examined the effects of Garcinia Cambogia on diabetic patients have been inconclusive. As such, it is not recommended that you begin a Garcinia Cambogia weight loss herbal supplement regimen without first discussing it with your doctor. Moreover, diabetics who take insulin should be especially careful.

On the bright side, if you are prediabetic and are seeking to stave off the development of diabetes with a healthier lifestyle that include plenty of sleep, abundant exercise, and a nutritious diet, Garcinia Cambogia will not cause a blood sugar crash and should be relatively safe. Of course, you still talk with your doctor before beginning any herbal supplement regimen - including one that utilizes Garcinia Cambogia.

Can you take Garcinia Cambogia if you have high blood pressure?

This question will follow similarly as the one relating to diabetes. It seems that Garcinia Cambogia can be most troubling for patients with high blood pressure when they take statins to help control cholesterol. Because both Garcinia Cambogia and statins have been shown to reduce bad cholesterol, this can lead to a snowball effect where you lose too much too quickly.

However, unlike with diabetes and a blood sugar crash, the risk of too low cholesterol do not carry the same potential for death - though they are still serious. Specifically, cholesterol the is too low has been linked with anxiety and depression. Moreover, one study suggested there might be a slight increase in the risk for certain cancers if your cholesterol is too low.

Be careful when taking prescription medication alongside: Ultimately, the risk for patients with high blood pressure is less than for those with diabetes, but you should still talk with your doctor before beginning any weight loss regimen that includes the herbal supplement Garcinia Cambogia. Moreover, you need to be especially careful if already take prescription medication, like statins, to help lower your cholesterol.

Ways to reduce the risk of Garcinia Cambogia side effects

The first thing to remember when beginning a Garcinia Cambogia regimen is to talk with your doctor first. It is imperative that the two of you make sure there are no underlying health problems which could be complicated by the addition of the weight loss herbal supplement. If the doctor gives you a clean bill of health, more or less, there are still a couple things to can do to help stave off any potential Garcinia Cambogia side effects.

Always follow instructions: First, you will always want to make sure you follow the instructions. This means ensuring that you take Garcinia Cambogia about 30 minutes before a major meal. Taking Garcinia Cambogia with food can help prevent some of the digestive side effects.

Drink water when taking: If food is unavailable, make sure you at least drink a full 8 ounces of water when taking the herbal supplement. While this is not as good as taking Garcinia Cambogia with food, it is still recommended by most manufacturers and is certainly better than taking the herbal supplement on an empty stomach.

Only take the recommended dosage: Another thing to make certain of is that you only take the recommended dosage. This means your Garcinia Cambogia capsules should have no more than 1000 mg of the extract within them. A little bit more might be okay, but some supplements out there will have up to 1500 mg that they recommend you take twice a day.

While this may still be the same daily amount and your long term risk of Garcinia Cambogia side effects will remain the same, the increased single doses are far more likely to cause unpleasant side effects than the smaller 1000 mg.

Do not take for longer than 12 weeks: Finally, do not take Garcinia Cambogia for more than 12 weeks straight before stopping the regimen and allowing your body to filter out any built up liver toxicity. While you may not see toxicity build up in your liver, Garcinia Cambogia has not been studied for longer periods of time. As such, no one really knows what the effects of longer regimens could be.

Safest Garcinia Cambogia Supplements

If you have spoken with your doctor and you both agree it is safe for you to begin a weight loss herbal supplement regimen that includes garcinia cambogia, I have 3 products to recommend:

All 3 of these supplements provide 1000 mg capsules - the maximum amount in a single dosage. Moreover, they all provide an HCA content of 60 percent - the only content percentage to be studied and verified by clinical trial.

Any supplement that says their HCA content is higher than 60 percent 1) is exceeding clinical evidence of safety and 2) had to use a synthetic process to get levels that pure.

Finally, all 3 of these Garcinia Cambogia manufacturers only recommend taking a maximum of 3000 mg a day total - again, the most that has been scientifically validated as safe.

I hope you have found this guide to Garcinia Cambogia side effects useful and wish you good luck on your weight loss regimen. If you have any further questions please leave your comment and I'll try to help.
