Is Garcinia Cambogia Approved by the FDA?

Garcinia Cambogia and the FDA

Garcinia cambogia has become one of the hottest ingredients included in a wide variety of weight loss supplement formulas recently. It all started with Dr. Oz when he introduced the extract on his show as a "miracle drug".

While he may have been overselling the effectiveness of Garcinia Cambogia, and its main ingredient hydroxycitric acid - as noted by the Lawsuit he and numerous weight supplement manufacturers are involved in - that does not change the fact it may still provide some benefit in the battle against the bulge.

This being the case, some may wonder if garcinia cambogia is safe and is Garcinia Cambogia approved by the FDA?

is the garcinia cambogia supplement FDA approved?

The truth about Garcinia Cambogia being FDA approved

It may seem a bit obvious to state, but the FDA has an explicitly narrow range of influence over products that are sold in the US. The name says it all: Food and Drug Administration. Unless the substance being sold is classified as food or a drug, the FDA does not have any jurisdiction.

For drugs, the FDA does have a fairly broad definition but the important part of Section 201(g) clause (B) of the FD&C Act (21 USC 321(g)) is key in that it provides the most used portion of the FDA’s definition of a drug which is "articles intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease in man or other animals".

Similarly, the FDA has its own definition for food in the same section of US code in subsection (f), right before the definition for drug, which states “The term “food” means (1) articles used for food or drink for man or other animals, (2) chewing gum, and (3) articles used for components of any such article.”

Notice, dietary supplements do not actually satisfy either of those two definitions which is why Congress passed a separate law to cover these products in the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA). However, it should be noted that this law gives the FDA the right to take action against dietary supplement manufacturers who misbrand or adulterate the product after it reaches market but require that "these firms are responsible for evaluating the safety and labeling of their products before marketing".

Essentially, the FDA will act as the police officer if the dietary supplement manufacturer does not follow the allowed ingredient guidelines, but they do not inspect these products beforehand. Instead, they rely on the manufacturers themselves to self-regulate or suffer stiff penalties. In short, no, there is no such thing as FDA approved garcinia cambogia.

garcinia cambogia FDA approved

Does FDA approval matter and should it matter to you?

Since the FDA does not have jurisdiction to directly regulate dietary supplements, you may be wondering whether they are actually safe to take. Well, even though there may not be any FDA approved garcinia cambogia, any of the ingredients in a dietary supplement have at least been studied and determined that they are safe for human consumption in the amounts provided.

That said, you may still want more assurance than “this will not kill you.” In this vein, there are numerous NGOs and other organizations which have stepped up to fill the void where the FDA’s legal authority ends. These are the third-party evaluators.

While these organizations can provide legitimate information and assurance about the quality of a dietary supplement, it is still important that you research the different evaluators themselves. Remember, all of these third-party evaluators are private institutions that are not actually bound by law to provide accurate information.

Of course, these organizations generally live or die by the value of the information they provide, so they are definitely incentivized to provide as accurate of information as possible. The main issue is that not all of the evaluating organizations study the same things. For instance, many of these third-party evaluators test the dietary supplements for contaminants as well as the quality of the ingredients.

However, the NNFA GMP does not test either of these factors and limits itself to inspecting the facility and manufacturing process exclusively. It is important to note that while the FDA may not regulate dietary supplements directly, they too inspect the manufacturing process and facility of any dietary supplement maker housed in the US. Unfortunately, their authority does not extend beyond the US borders which is where organizations like the NNFA GMP come into play.

While the FDA’s approval can provide a layer of relief regarding the substances which we consume, it is not the end-all-be-all that some people may think it is. Though dietary substances are not included under the FDA’s direct jurisdiction, their ingredients are and the accuracy of their marketing most certainly is as well. Moreover, if you need additional assurance, there are numerous other third-party evaluators that fill in the gaps of an all-but-absent FDA.

5 Recommended Garcinia Cambogia Brands to look out for

Evolution Slimming Garcinia Cambogia Pure

Evolution Slimming

Evolution Slimming sells two types of garcinia cambogia weight loss supplement: Garcinia Pure and a general Garcinia Cambogia. It is important to note that both of these formulas a vegan which means that they are vegetarian based and dairy free. That said, there is a big difference between the two.

Specifically, the Garcinia Pure formula boasts a 100 percent natural formula while the general Garcinia Cambogia brand makes no such claims - though there is no elaboration on what is not a naturally occurring ingredient either. That said, the more general Garcinia Cambogia does have calcium and potassium added.

Regardless, neither garcinia cambogia supplement contains caffeine which is a relief. On top of that, both dietary supplements are made in the UK in FDA and MHRA certified facilities. Unfortunately, none of the third-party organizations that evaluate the actual product are included in these certifications.

bauer nutrition Garcinia Cambogia

Bauer Nutrition

Unlike Evolution Slimming, Bauer Nutrition has an entirely different organizational structure in that the business itself is headquartered in Cyprus, an island nation off the coast of Greece. That said, this has more to do with avoiding taxes than being able to get away with shady manufacturing practices. In fact, Bauer Nutrition products are manufactured in UK facilities that are FDA approved.

In terms of their garcinia cambogia dietary supplement, the Bauer Nutrition brand differs from some of the others in that it includes additional ingredients to assist in your weight loss goals. Specifically, this garcinia cambogia weight loss supplement includes 99 percent raspberry ketone extract.

It should be noted that raspberry ketone does have some positive scientific evidence suggesting that it may further promote weight loss - though, like with garcinia cambogia the clinical trials are too few to draw definitive conclusions.

garcinia cambogia extra

Garcinia Cambogia Extra

If you think that Garcinia Cambogia Extra looks eerily similar to Bauer Nutrition’s garcinia cambogia dietary supplement, you should pat yourself on the back for a sharp eye. This is because both of these products are made by the same company: Wolfson Berg Limited. As such, pretty much all of the same statements made about the Bauer Nutrition garcinia cambogia apply to Garcinia Cambogia Extra as well.

Recommended: Garcinia Gambogia Extra

For one, both of these products contain 99 percent raspberry ketone. While we noted that raspberry ketone has some promising scientific literature in tepid support of its weight loss benefits, it should also be noted that raspberry ketone extract must be synthesized as its naturally occurring form is too small in quantity to harvest from raspberries directly.

Much like the Bauer Nutrition garcinia cambogia dietary supplement, Garcinia Cambogia Extract is made in an FDA approved facility located in the UK. While it is not stated as such, there is likely a good chance that both supplements are made in the same facility and differ primarily in packaging and name only.

is garcinia cambogia ultra pure FDA approved?

Garcinia Ultra Pure

Garcinia Cambogia Ultra is at once a return to form for the garcinia cambogia weight loss supplements on our list as well as a bit of a departure. This is because this is the only garcinia cambogia product here that contains a 50 percent concentrated hydroxycitric acid formula which carries with it some distinct advantages.

First, it is important to note that any observed weight loss benefits from garcinia cambogia dietary supplements have come from supplements that contain at least 50 percent concentrated hydroxycitric acid. However, you might be wondering how a less concentrated formula could provide an advantage over a more concentrated formula.

This is because garcinia cambogia extract does present the risk of increased liver toxicity. Granted, this generally occurs at doses higher than most of the supplements we looked at, but a less concentrated formula will reduce those potential concerns even further while still providing potential weight loss benefits.

premium garcinia-cambogia not approved by fda

Garcinia Cambogia Premium

Garcinia Cambogia Premium pops up last on our list mostly due to an absence of information more than negative information. For instance, it is only the second garcinia cambogia dietary supplement we looked at which does not provide an image of their label. Aside from the fact that this prevents you from examining their active ingredients list thoroughly, it also prevents you from knowing what the recommended dosage is ahead of time.

Learn more: Garcinia Gambogia Ultra Premium

Of course, the absence of a label to examine the active ingredients is arguably more relevant to this brand of garcinia cambogia dietary supplement than the others because this is the only brand we looked at which includes not only potassium and calcium - which are part of Evolution Slimming’s general Garcinia Cambogia formula--but chromium too.

This is important because most of the garcinia cambogia weight loss supplements which are part of class action lawsuits are singled out with the inclusion of that ingredient in their formulas - though there is no suggestion that Garcinia Cambogia Premium is included among them. Also, this is the only garcinia cambogia dietary supplement on our list without an FDA-approved facility.

In Summary

Not only have we answered the question "Is Garcinia Cambogia approved by the FDA," but we have also provided you some information to seek out further answers on your own. Unfortunately, there is not a large body of scientific work related to garcinia cambogia and many of the claims cannot yet be scientifically validated.

That is not to suggest garcinia cambogia cannot help you achieve your weight loss goals, but it is certainly not the "miracle drug" it was once billed as.

Still, we have made it a point to provide you with a list of reputable companies which make and sell garcinia cambogia-based weight loss supplements if you would like to find out about their benefits for yourself!
